When we as people finally communicate and open up to each other, true understanding and human connection can be found. This is the guiding theme I have made for my drama comedy project Just Be Funny. I feel that this film will work to convey this message to the audience, as well as telling a deep and rich story about two characters finding a way to fulfill this theme. As the director of the film, I feel that it is integral that I work on all aspects of the production to create a cohesive product.

I plan on using a very grounded and confined setting to emphasize the characters feeling stuck with each other, allowing for audiences to see them evolve from pushing away from each other, to becoming close and emotionally open. With a story as real and dire as this, I want to lean more heavily on using realism, as if to trick the audience into looking like they’re seeing a glimpse into real life.

The film Birdman will always hold an important place in my heart for the inventive ways that it handles long scenes with minimal cuts, and these strong and powerful monologues, characters pouring out their hearts. While the visual language is the primary aspect of any film, I still find it important to use a dialogue heavy film and focus on the conversation the two main characters have, showing their emotions evolve, not just visually, but from how they are talking to each other as well.

From these aspects I hold so important, I need to ensure that everything works cohesively to make this film work in a grounded reality. The acting must be strong and powerful, but not melodramatic, the lighting and colors will be harsh and help build the constricting atmosphere, but still feel like real lights in a room. The editing must allow for these scenes to take place in a singular area, the green room of a comedy club, but with the cohesion of the actors blocking, the dialogue, and the editing, the scene never feels boring or uninteresting to view.

Production Design

Joseph Noder

After taking a film production class in highschool, I realized film was my true passion. Currently, I attend Arizona State University, studying film and media production in the Sidney Poitier New American Film School. From learning from industry professionals and collaborating with my fellow student filmmakers, I have been able to gain knowledge and experience in and out of class. I have worked on a number of short films gaining experience in several roles. I have taken crew roles as a writer, gaffer, assistant camera, and production designer. These diverse roles have deepened my understanding of filmmaking on a different level and helped me discover what I truly love to do. Storytelling is the most powerful tool in the world, and I am honored that I can share my creative voice through film. I plan on graduating from Arizona State University in the spring of 2026 and continuing my film career after graduation.
